Residing somewhere between stuffed animal and decorative pillow (too small for a pillow and lacking anthropomorphic figure), this series of hand-held objects explores ambivalence through notions of tactility, soft joinery, and frontal orientation. The application of fur evokes a need to be pet, yet the scale repels a cuddle; hand-sewn seams fight the meeting of dissimilar materials while a single button dimples the bulging pocket; and the dilemma of face and rear, inherent (even if subconsciously) in any furniture accessory, is intensified by the duality of character expressed within each swatch. The ambivalence of PLUSH is found in it’s name: both pure luxury and adorable kitsch.
