Builder,

It has come to my attention that the conditions of reality are not as they were initially anticipated.  Virtually all of the dimensional lumber intended to enact my visions for this space have arrived on site in a more “natural” state.  Floor joists are bent, twisted and cupped out of the tolerances allowed for in the original detailing. Please see attached drawing for more precisely resolved details pertaining to the assembly and aesthetics of the architecture. Work to be completed is as follows:

Remove:

  1. All decorative wood trim.
  2. Sections of floor joist as needed for flush structural alignment with sill plate below.

Add:

  1. Shims as noted.
  2. Blocking as noted.
  3. Fasteners as detailed.
  4. J-bead at flared GWB edges.

Change:

  1. Re-align structural joints as noted to resolve conflicts.
  2. Flare GWB as detailed to resolve conflicts.
  3. Flare finish floor assembly as detailed to resolve conflicts.
  4. Cup/bend/twist/relocate woodwork as detailed to resolve conflicts.

I have Cc’d the owner above to notify them that these changes will not affect cost as the superfluous ornamentation of the decorative trim is no longer able to conceal the mess of the materials provided, and can be promptly removed from the design. Likewise, the toil toward legibility and precision at spatial edges is now obviously a delusion and should be removed from concern in the efforts toward the interiors. It is my intention, now that the architecture has been liberated from these two biases previously controlling my mind, that the experience within the home will flow more “naturally” with the ethos of the matter defining it. Out of tolerance has emerged a new opportunity for surface continuity in relation to the constructed frame as a driving force for authoring the spatial flows and connectivity of domesticity.

Regards,

Designer
